Southwell AW Code Breaker

Up early on this bank holiday monday to check out the form for the 8 races on the card and to try to crack the AW code at Southwell today. I have my eye on 6 handicaps.

❖ Jockeys ❖ Hector Crouch is having a good season, as is Paddy Bradley ~ they are the two jocks I'll be focusing on today.

❖ Trainers ❖ Trainer focus is not of much use today regarding pointers.

❖ Draw Bias ❖ The draw bias at Southwell is non existent. Back who you like wherever they're drawn. If backing any front runners, pay close attention to whether you think they have the ability to actually get home up the slightly uphill 1.5f finish.

❖ Bet Selection Considerations ❖

• Anything ridden by Hector Crouch or Paddy Bradley
• Solid Southwell C&D form may be a good pointer this afternoon
• I will be discounting the maiden runner race ~ focusing on the handicaps only

Southwell Betting Analysis

2:15 Southwell ❖ 2mile C5 Hcp ❖ Hector Crouch rides New York Minute (9/4f) for Ralph Beckett.

Conclusion: New York Minute (9/4f) is having his first run on the All Weather. I cannot possibly back him at 9/4f. He may well win, but there are some obvious opponents who are not worth opposing at the odds on offer.

2:50 Southwell ❖ 1m C6 Hcp ❖ Tiempo Allegre (3/1f) won easily last time up over the C&D.

Conclusion: Ridden by Hector Crouch last time up, Tiempo Allegre won easily by 4.5l over the C&D a month ago. Upped 9lb for that effort, I am of the opinion the rise probably won't be enough to stop her following up.

2:50 South ~ Win Bet: 3/1f Tiempo Allegre (2nd 7/2f)

4:00 Southwell ❖ 7f C6 3yo Hcp ❖ Hector Crouch comes here on the well fancied Sheikh Raj (2/1f)

Conclusion: Sheikh Raj (2/1f) has just had a win op and looks like the likely winner in this low grade hcp. I won't be chancing it though, not at the price. I'll watch.

Conclusion: This represent a slight drop in grade for Dannick and he looks like he'll go well on the surface. I think the 7/2 on offer is a reasonable betting proposition.

Evening meeting at Newcastle. The racecard is an ITV terrestrial TV free to air Racing League handicap only offering tonight ~ 7 hcp's from 7 races to go through. I will take a look at cracking the AW code with the ones with Mulrennan aboard.

❖ Jockeys ❖ So, I am on Paul Mulrennan only today. Top jockey. 42 wins from 233 rides this season, a reasonable strike rate of 17% ~ not magnificent, but workable nonetheless.

Newcastle Betting Analysis

6:15 Newcastle ❖ 12f C3 Hcp. Midnight Lion (16/1) is priced up as a bit of a no hoper. I am of the opinion he may well not be that far away at the end.

Conclusion: Plenty of talking horses in the race to worry about, but at the price, The Lion has some solid efforts to his name. With the aid of Mulrennan up top, he might just roar past them all.

#betting note: 35/1 is currently freely available on the exchanges.

6:15 Newc ~ Win Bet: 16/1 Midnight Lion (Unplaced 22/1)

7:45 Newcastle ❖ 5f C4 Hcp. Bonito Cavalo 12/1 is impossible to rule out now back on the AW circuit after some not so great runs on turf. I can also see very generous looking 12/1 odds on offer.

Conclusion: Bonito has some rock solid Newcastle AW form over the C&D, from today's mark of 80 by the way. Paul Mulrennan was aboard last time he won here 6 months back. Maybe he will be again.

7:45 Newc ~ Win Bet: 12/1 Bonito Cavalo (Unplaced 20/1)

8:45 Newcastle ❖ 6f C3 Hcp. Oriental Prince 12/1 is arguably running right at the top of his ability mark-wise (79) ~ but he's had a great season and he's only a 4yo, so who's to say he won't improve again now back at the scene of his best runs?

Conclusion: The Prince is a danger to them all if he carries on his upward projectory now running back on the AW. I'll take my chances at the double figure odds on offer.

#betting note: The 12/1 on offer at the bookies is matched on the exchanges. They are wary of this one it seems.

3:10 Lingfield ❖ 6f C5 Hcp. So Sassy (11/4) has a reasonable chance of breaking her duck. 11/4f though? Not for me.

3:45 Lingfield ❖ 2m C6 Hcp. Grey Owl (3/1) will have to improve a couple of lengths with the ad of Crouch to win here. At 3/1 I won't be playing. I'd take a chance at 6/1 ~ 3/1 is not a decent betting proposition from what I can see.

4:20 Lingfield ❖ 1m 4f C4 Hcp. Bintabuha (14/1) will have to answer the question marks over the going and distance for me to get involved.

4:20 Lingfield ❖ 5f C6 Hcp. Sarabi (17/2) posted a much better performance when winning over 6f here last time up. Upped 8lb for that run is a tiny bit harsh, but not extravagantly so. The 17/2 on offer here following up with the aid of Crouch over a furlong shorter is a fair price in this 7 runner race.

I think he's slightly short, but the weight for age allowance he receives will be enough to see him over the line.

Chelmsford Betting Analysis

6:15 Chelmsford ❖ C6 hcp over 5f. Latin Five 11/2 has reasonable form in his grade on the All Weather tracks over 5f on the Tapeta surface. I see no reason why he won't go on today's Polytrack surface for the first time of asking.

He's on a handy mark at 51 ~ his best win was at 57 over 5f at Newcastle. Liam Wright is an able apprentice claiming 3lb. I also think the 11/2 is quite generous. He looks about a 3/1 shot, tops.

A decent looking Kempton AWR meeting is up for this evening. I will attempt to crack the Kempton All Weather code in as few words as possible.

❖ Jockeys ❖ The jockeys I am concentrating on are top jocks Oisin Murphy and 3 X champion jockey Silvestre De Sousa.

❖ Trainers ❖ The trainers on my hit list at Kempton this evening are Roger Varian and the Andrew Balding stable. I will be taking a close look at everything they put out.

Other trainers of note are on the card, but I will be concentrating on the two mentioned. The aim is to isolate a couple of winners and not get confused by meticulously reading hundreds of horses form ~ thereby ending up with no idea who to back.

7:15 Kempton ❖ 7f C4 Hcp. Al Kawssaa (7/1) and Red Mirage (5/1) both have plenty going for them. Both however, are not drawn so well. Horses can still win over the 7f trip at Kempton from outside draws, but I won't bet on it.

7:45 Kempton ❖ 8f C4 Hcp. King Of Fury (11/2) takes on a couple of 3yo talking horses, but they have been found by the market at 3/1jf's. Fury sets the benchmark in this 14 runner handicap and for me, is the one they all have to beat. I make him the arguable 5/2fav from an inside draw with top jockey Oisin Murphy booked.

7:45 Kempton ~ Win Bet: 11/2 King Of Fury (4th 4/1)

8:15 Kempton ❖ 1m 4f C5 Hcp. Dubawi Time (9/2) and topweight Damascus Steel (11/2) are 3rd and 4th fav in this one. I'm happy they can beat all these rivals. As far as I'm concerned, I need to pick the winner of a match between the two.

#verdict: I think Dubawi Time with the aid of Murphy, and the drop back down to a handy mark of 60, will take all the beating.
