Teofilio's Trainer Jim Bolger On 2000 Guineas Ommittance:
"Teofilo had a blow-out on Thursday morning at 6.30am over five furlongs and moved with his usual fluency.

"He gave every indication that he was fit and ready to run.

"Unfortunately at 9.00am there was excessive heat, and some soreness at the back of his off-fore knee when palpated.

"After discussions with my senior staff, I have decided that it would not be prudent to run him in Saturday's Stan James 2000 Guineas.

"Consequently, I shall not be declaring him for the race.

"My staff and I have made every effort to have Teofilo fit and well for the first Classic of 2007 but must now accept that a cautious approach is the correct way to go as more serious damage could be done if subjected to a race at this time.

Overview of the 2007 KENTUCKY DERBY

2007 Kentucky Derby Overview

This years Kentucky Derby... the 133rd running of the classic "Run For The Roses"... has a scheduled field of 20 starters... all 3 year olds... and it is a wide open race that could see ANY of these 20 horses being victorious.

This is an extremely difficult race to handicap... as the large field will create a lot of traffic problems... and make positioning vital, but difficult... and racing "luck" will play a big part in the outcome of this race.

The major contenders are morning line favorite CURLIN (4/1)... with STREET SENSE (4/1)... SCAT DADDY (6/1)... and NOBIZ LIKE SHOBIZ (8/1) all likely to receive a fair amount of betting support.

A few "price shots" are TIAGO (16/1)... CIRCULAR QUAY (7/1)... and ANY GIVEN SATURDAY (14/1)... all in with a big chance, in my opinion.

With this race at a mile and a quarter distance... which is longer than any of these horses have ever raced before... the horse that gets the best trip, and avoids traffic... will have the best shot a winning.

With no real "stand out"... the stretch run in this race should be dramatic... with any horse within 5-6 lengths at the top of the stretch a possible winner.

This will be a great race to "watch"... but NOT to bet... other than to take a shot with a few 20-1 or better horses and perhaps "get lucky"... as there is little value in betting anything at less odds.

I have been a horse racing fan/fanatic for over 40 years now.

I have watched, wagered, and owned race horses during that timespan.

I primarily follow American Harness racing, but I do enjoy Thoroughbred racing as well.

I watched Kauai King win the Kentucky Derby in 1966... and have watched every Kentucky Derby since.

Over the years... I have never grown tired of watching horse's race... everything from the cheap claimers and maiden races... to the top stake races like the Breeders Cup and Triple Crown races.

I have picked my fair share of winners... and MORE than my share of "losers"... but hope springs eternal in the mind of a horse player and gambler.

I hope to contribute to this blog periodically, and offer a bit of insight into a few major races... and racing in general.

I will post an "overview" shortly of this years Kentucky Derby... to be raced on Saturday May 5th.

Apex Disqualified - Hadden Frost 2 Day Ban

Haddon Frost Was Banned For 2 Days For Careless Riding On Apex which still bemuses me. It genuinely did not look to me like there was very much wrong with promising 5lb claimer jockey Haddon Frost's ride on Apex on the Southwell fibresand.

Ok, so I backed the disqualified 4/1 shot Apex in the Southwell 4.30 1 mile 3 furlongs handicap, but it does not necissarily follow I would talk through my pocket and deny a jockey made a mistake. If I could clearly see it were a case of bad riding, I would gladly say so.

The Southwell stewards judged Haddon Frost and his horse Apex had carried the short-head 2nd placed horse Sugatani out to the right in the last furlong and decided to reverse the 1st and 2nd placed horses finishing order.

♠ Haddon Frost, is suspended on May 12 through to May 14.

Musselburgh All Weather Project Progress

All-weather racing code followers will likely be aware various racecourses are eyeing up the benefits associated with AW racing surfaces, such as the Southwell fibresand or the Lingfield polytrack. Many racehorse trainers have caught on - all weather gallops are appearing more and more at training stables.

Musselburgh intend to install a floodlit all-weather track, alongside improvements to the East Lothian grade 1 turf racetrack and a new stable complex/stable yard (estimated total cost of £11 million).

The Musselburgh AW & General Racecourse Improvements Project

♠ Floodlit all-weather track (AWT). Construction of a floodlit AWT to enable Musselburgh Racecourse and Scotland to host up to 60 additional flat racing racedays between September and March inclusive.

♠ New turf track layout. Alongside the AWT the layout of Musselburgh’s existing turf track would be improved at every point to enable Musselburgh to stage top quality racing. The new turf track would be safer for all participants.

♠ New Stable Complex. Construction of new stable yard to accommodate more horses to a higher standard as per the Jockey Club guidelines & improved stable staff facilities.

Donkey Derby Racing

The Donkey (equus asinus) Derby races exist, not run very fast, but the race exists, I have raced in a donkey race just outside Yarmouth racecourse. OK, it was 22 years ago while on holiday with my parents. I came last, in fact the donkey I was riding stopped running to chew some grass. As my silly ass stooped it's neck to grab a mouthfull of greenery, I nearly went arse over tit, I am no jockey. I came last, in fact I did not finish the course, I jumped off when every other runner had long finished the race.

Donkey racing is better known as "The Donkey Derby". Donkey races and rides at the seaside used to be very popular in Great Britain, but since the demise of the British seaside due to the Costa Brava style holidays and cheap airfair, the donkey is not seen at the seaside very much these days. I'd hazard a guess the donkey derby is not run at Yarmouth anymore, who knows?

The Recommended Donkey Derby Course
The donkey racecourse should be horseshoe in shape, or straight and be 100-150 yards (90-140 metres) in length.

The minimum width of the donkey derby racing course should be calculated by allowing one yard for each of the donkeys running together in the competition, plus one yard intervals between each, and also between the side barriers and the donkeys running on the left and right extremeties (outside lanes) of the course.

  • 7 donkeys - 15 yards (13.5 metres)
  • 8 donkeys - 17 yards (15.3 metres)

Competetive Donkey Racing
Donkey Racing is quite popular in the Caribbean. Various Donkey Derbies (and goats) are run at various Caribbean festivals. Maybe they even bet on the donkeys & goats there, I do not know. I would be surprised if there were a race going on with no odds on offer for wagering purposes.

In Pakistan, donkeys are raced towing carts. Quite a popular sport, or so I read. The Pakistani donkey and cart racing jockeys are adults, but are not heavy-set men weighing in at 14 stone.

In Great Britain, there are "Donkey Derby" guidelines. Adults are not generally allowed to ride donkeys at amusement parks or seafront beaches. The recommended age is 9-15 years of age and the children must be no heavier than 8 stone in weight.

Adults can ride in competetive donkey racing derbies, but they must stick to the 8 stone and under weight restriction.
