Hi Sandracer,
Just noticed the Winter Derby is scheduled for Saturday.
I've promised myself I'll pay more attention to A/W racing in future, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions...
After a quick look at the declarations, I see Richard Hannon's Scintillo is the top-rated animal on official ratings. Any thoughts at this stage?
As an aside, I'm a lifelong Wrexham fan - been to Loftus Rd on several occasions when we were in old Div Two years ago but we've hit the bad times and will be lucky to make the Blue Square Premiership playoffs :-(

It's not easy to guess who will actually run Deegee.

Scintillo ran ok behind Re Barollo and Suits me in the trial. Of those that ran then, i'd probably back the 4th placed home that day Kandidate at likely odds. I don't actually think Kandidate has much chance of winning though, so i'd be looking for 33's, and to small stakes.

However, looking forward to a possible surprise winner at decent odds, I am leaning towards Channon's Halicarnassus first time up at Lingfield.

The horse is 1 for 1 on the polytrack, having won a handicap over the distance at Nad Al Shiba.

Just don't tell everyone ;)

Won't tell a soul.

See Scintillo declared in 8.20 @ Kempton tomorrow.

Comment Posted By Blogger GeeDee - 9:15 pm, March 17, 2009

You can get 16's or so on Scintillo.

If it jogs up tomorrow, it'll be shorter.

If it runs like a barge, it'll probably not go on saturday.

Comment Posted By Blogger Sandracer - 9:34 pm, March 17, 2009

Scintilla duly jogged up this evening, and is still available to back at 16/1 for the Winter Derby on saturday.

Haven't had a bet; Scintillo now quoted 10/1. Looking at the final twelve this morning, your proposition of Halicarnassus makes more appeal - top-rated horse and a bigger price (14/1). See he's drawn twelve of twelve - a disadvantage?

Comment Posted By Blogger GeeDee - 11:41 am, March 19, 2009

Some would argue yes racing position-wise. I'd argue 1m2 at Lingfield is winnable from an outside draw, if the horse is good enough.

It might help push the price out though, which would be to my liking.

Comment Posted By Blogger Sandracer - 3:06 pm, March 19, 2009

I buy into your view on Halicarnassus - he's the top-rated horse and looks a value play - but I'm going to take out the each-way insurance ;-)

Sportingbet.com Winter Derby (group 3), 4yo plus, 1m 2f, Class 1

Shortlisted: Premio Loco, Re Barolo, Without A Prayer, Bronze Cannon, Suits Me, Scintillo,

I’m not convinced by the recent runs of Re Barolo, Suits Me and Scintillo. A five runner race, uncontested lead for Suits Me ending in a blanket finish at the line, they all can’t be that good and they all face different race conditions today..

It always takes a few months for the Godolphin horses to acclimatise when they return from Dubai. Without A Prayer is opposed for this reason (been running in the Dubai Carnival)

With doubts about the favorite Premio Loco staying the distance, Bronze Cannon is unexposed and had to contend with interrupted runs in his last two races when making his final challenge. 3rd time lucky?

Bronze Cannon @ 6/1 or better

Dont forget to look out for me on the TV tomorrow.. I'll be easy to spot ... ... I'm the one wearing a barrel and braces when I've done my nuts!

I can't argue with your write up Slipper, apart from spelling favourite "favorite".

The horse I like the least is the one most likely to dot up, ie the jolly. I can't be having 2/1 about guessing whether the extra distance is suitable.

Of those others you mentioned that ran in the trial, i'd rather take Kandidate at big odds, who came 4th that day.

Geedee's curiosity about Scintilla is interesting. Before it nigh on halved in price before winning midweek.

note to any readers: Slippery Toad is off to Lingfield and will be updating things when he can.

If you can take a few pictures to put in the bloggers library of legal to use all-weather racing photos Slipper, i'd be much obliged.

I forgot to mention it to Geedee when he was off to Cheltenham last week.

Didn't take any pix at Cheltenham this year (may have some from previous years); also daughter may have some from Stratford yesterday - let me know the procedure if you think they may be of interest.
