The Oaks – Epsom Downs
The Oaks▸ is a Group 1 classic for 3yo fillies▸ tests stamina▸ tests speed▸ tests class▸ over the undulating 1.5 miles at Epsom.
Desert Flower (6/4)▸ Unbeaten 1,000 Guineas winner leads the betting. Her stamina over the extended distance is unproven▸ especially on the good to soft going.
🟃 Aidan O’Brien’s trio▸ Minnie Hauk (9/2)▸ Whirl (15/2)▸ Giselle (9/1)▸ add depth.
Whirl’s Musidora Stakes form making her a strong contender. She'll be who the shrewdie EW thieves will be banking on.
🟃 With Elwateen▸ looms the threat of a Godolphin upset.
Decent Field▸ The field’s depth ensures a competitive race. Weather will be crucial ~ soft ground could favour stamina bred fillies.
⭐ Sandracer Selection▸ I'll take them on with Bin Suroor's Elwateen at 14/1 ~ Win Only.
✨ She's very likely overpriced and the blue of Goldolphin are hardly ever far away when it comes to the big races.
Desert Flower
Odds: 6/4
Unbeaten filly trained by Charlie Appleby.
Her 1,000 Guineas win showcases her class, but the Oaks longer distance is a question mark. Favourite and will win ~ if she stays.
Winning Chance Probability ~30%
Minnie Hauk
Odds: 9/2 4/1
O’Brien-trained filly with strong Oaks pedigree. A solid contender who could challenge the jolly.
Ryan Moore in the saddle. Dangerous duo. Don't think she'll do it today. Bit short for me.
Winning Chance Probability ~15%
Whirl
Odds: 15/2
Aidan O’Brien’s improving filly, strong in the Musidora Stakes.
Proven stamina makes her a major threat, especially on the good to soft ground she has today.
Winning Chance Probability ~20%
Revoir
Odds: 11/1 9/1
Trained by Ralph Beckett, this filly has potential but needs to find more to compete at this very top level.
Winning Chance Probability ~5%
Giselle
Odds: 9/1 8/1
Another O’Brien runner with solid form. Needs a step up to challenge the top three, but remains competitive.
Winning Chance Probability ~5%
Elwateen
Odds: 12/1 14/1
Less exposed filly with potential to improve. A possible value pick who could place or better if the favourites falter.
Winning Chance Probability ~15%
We mightake d longway
Odds: 16/1 12/1
Joseph O’Brien’s runner with decent form. Likely to place rather than win but could surprise.
Winning Chance Probability ~5%
Qilin Queen
Odds: 33/1 22/1
Longer priced contender suited to stamina tests. Could thrive on soft ground for a place.
Winning Chance Probability ~3%
Go Go Boots
Odds: 40/1
Outsider from the Gosden stable. Faces a tough task but could sneak a place at long odds.
Winning Chance Probability ~2%

How The Oaks Went: As I Saw It
A tight renewal of the Oaks saw Minnie Hauk narrowly prevail in a dramatic finish at Epsom Downs. Ridden with confidence by Ryan Moore, the Aidan O’Brien-trained filly tracked the early pace before asserting over two furlongs out. Despite hanging left under pressure and receiving a bump in the closing strides, she held on gamely by a neck to deny stablemate Whirl, who had cut out the running before rallying strongly when headed.
Hot favourite Desert Flower could only manage third, four lengths adrift, having travelled in a prominent position but failing to pick up well as the front two. There was a further length back to Wemightakedlongway in fourth, while Giselle, another of O'Brien’s trio, ran on late for fifth after a slow start and troubled passage.
The remainder were well held, with Revoir, Elwateen, Qilin Queen, and Go Go Boots all fading out of contention from two furlongs out. The race, run on slightly testing ground, was another big race gone to Ireland via O'Brien's dominance, claiming first, second, and fifth.
