Cheltenham Festival Special

The Cheltenham Festival is almost here! In part one, Dave Ord is joined by Patrick Mullins, Ed Chamberlin, Graham Cunningham, and David Johnson to discuss the big talking points. Matt Brocklebank and Billy Nash join the party for part two as the team picks out some bets.

◢ The Sporting Life Horse Racing Podcast: Cheltenham Festival Special kicks off with host Dave Ord welcoming listeners to a preview of the Cheltenham Festival, now less than a week away as of March 08, 2025. In part one, he’s joined by Patrick Mullins, Ed Chamberlin, Graham Cunningham, and David Johnson to dive into the big yards, key horses, and major talking points. Part two, teased early, will feature Matt Brocklebank and Billy Nash, but this synopsis focuses on the first installment. The tone is lively and conversational, blending expert analysis with banter as they gear up for one of racing’s biggest events.

◢ A central figure in the discussion is Constitution Hill, trained by Nicky Henderson. Ed Chamberlin champions him as the festival’s poster boy, especially for the Champion Hurdle. The panel reflects on his jaw ~ dropping Sky Bet Supreme win two years ago, where Patrick Mullins recalls riding Kilcruit and watching Constitution Hill surge ahead despite a blistering pace set by Jonbon and Dysart Dynamo. David Johnson notes his recent form ~ running in the 160s at Kempton, a stone below his peak ~ but optimism persists that he could reclaim his best. Henderson’s popularity with the public and his yard’s need for a luck turnaround after last year’s setbacks are recurring themes.

Galopin Des Champs, trained by Willie Mullins, emerges as a counterpoint. While Chamberlin admits his brilliance ~ highlighted by a rapturous Leopardstown reception ~ his once-a-year UK appearance limits his local following compared to Constitution Hill. Patrick Mullins praises his versatility for the Gold Cup, capable of leading or sitting back, with Paul Townend riding him confidently. The panel sees him as near-unbeatable, with rivals like Gerri Colombe and Grey Dawning sidelined, though Banbridge and Fact To File are mentioned as potential twists if the ground dries out. His pursuit of a third Gold Cup stirs historical excitement, evoking Arkle and Best Mate.

◢ The Champion Hurdle field gets scrutiny, with Brighterdaysahead and State Man in focus. Patrick Mullins hopes Constitution Hill isn’t at his peak, as it’d spell trouble for rivals. Brighterdaysahead’s freakish Leopardstown win impresses, but her loss to Golden Ace in a mares’ novice hurdle raises doubts. State Man’s Morgiana form suggests he’s closer to her than odds imply, though his Christmas no-show muddies the picture. Lossiemouth, a Willie Mullins contender, is noted as a mare who’d be deadly with her 7lb allowance in a typical year, but Constitution Hill’s class looms large.

Jonbon, also from Nicky Henderson’s yard, dominates the Champion Chase talk. His CV screams quality, and Nico de Boinville’s positive riding has transformed him, despite a mixed Cheltenham record (two wins from five). Patrick Mullins sees Solness setting a pace to suit him, with Marine Nationale a threat on decent ground. The panel debates his hill-climbing ability, dismissing past defeats as early-career hiccups. Eldorado Allen and others are long shots, but Jonbon’s current form makes him a standout.

◢ The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle introduces Mullins Kopek Des Bordes. His DRF demolition impresses, though his keenness and rawness ~ potentially needing a hood ~ worry Mullins. Rivals like Mirazur West, William Munny, and Romeo Coolio bring varied form, with Mirazur West’s maiden hurdle win sparking debate. Salver, another Mullins hope, shines in work but lacks racing efficiency. The race’s emotional kickoff, with a minute’s applause for Michael O’Sullivan, adds weight to its renamed Sky Bet Supreme status.

◢ The Turners Novices Chase pits Final Demand against The New Line. Patrick Mullins lauds Final Demand’s professionalism and speed, predicting a future Gold Cup horse, while The New Line, trained by Dan Skelton, earns praise for cat-like jumping. Both impressed at the DRF, with Final Demand’s form deemed stronger. Fun Fun Fun and other unexposed entries offer each-way value, but the clash between these two is the headline. Ground conditions ~ shifting to spring-like firmness ~ could tilt the scales.

◢ Juvenile hurdlers take the stage in the Triumph Hurdle, with East India Dock (trained by James Owen) and Henderson's Lulamba leading British hopes. East India Dock’s battle-hardened edge contrasts Lulamba’s raw promise, despite Henderson’s Triumph pedigree. Ireland’s juveniles, like Helnwein (trained by Gavin Cromwell), underwhelm, with Patrick Mullins noting their lack of a standout. Stencil’s Fred Winter performance could boost East India Dock’s credentials if he runs well.

◢ Handicap hopefuls and ground conditions weave through the chat. Patrick Mullins highlights novices with fewer runs this year due to a dry autumn, suggesting some could improve 15-25 pounds on better ground. The panel expects properly watered, safe going ~ not quick ~ shaping races differently from winter slogs. Horses like Lucky Place and Wodhooh (trained by Gordon Elliott) are buzzed about later, though part one focuses on the graded stars.

Ballyburn and Copacabana close out part one’s Willie Mullins spotlight. Patrick Mullins leans toward Ballyburn for the bumper, impressed by his schooling, while Copacabana’s steady improvement surprises. Their late emergence adds intrigue, with temperament key in the bumper’s chaos.

Chelmsford Bets - Sat Mat 8 2025 (evening meeting)

7:00 Nubough (20/1) will get stuck in as he usually does. The 6f distance is not a problem. The mark of 55 is a winnable one.

The problem for Nubough is he pulls a bit early it seems. He's 9yrs old now. Time to calm down and win some races.

8:00 Love Your Work (25/1) comes here fit and ready to go after 2 runs last month. Both races beaten about 7 lengths.

Today he's dropped a 1lb and young claimer Mason Paetel takes off another 7.

I think he'll go well at a price this evening.

2025 Cheltenham Festival Previews

Cheltenham Festival 2025
Four Days of Top Jumps Racing

◢ The Cheltenham Festival 2025 runs from Tuesday March 11th to Friday March 14th. The festival is the pride of the National Hunt calendar, this 4 day NH jumping showcase features 28 races, which includes 13 Grade 1 contests.⯇

Day 1 Champion Day - Tuesday, March 11▼

◢ First day the Festival kicks off with Champions Day. Race 1 is the newly named Michael O'Sullivan Supreme Novices Hurdle (1:20). The big race of day 1 is the Champion Hurdle (3:20) ~ Constitution Hill is about 4/7 on atm.

Speed & stamina will be tested all day. The crowd will be as large as it usually is.

The Prestbury Cup battle between Britain and Ireland will be in full flow by the end of the first day. The Irish keep winning ~ will 2025 be any different? Highly doubtful according to the bookies, they're 1/9 on the Irish.⯇

Day 2: Style Wednesday - Wednesday, March 12▼

◢ Fashionstas with Pimms, fancy clothes and fancy hats will be watching the Queen Mother Champion Chase (3:20) from the raucous stands. Jonbon's odds on (8/11 ~ 11/10 in a place), Il Est Francais and Marine Nationale are about 5's. 2 miles of Sprinter Sacre rapid jumping will win it for you.⯇

Day 3: St Patrick’s Thursday - Thursday, March 13▼

The Ryanair Chase (2:40 PM) and Paddy Power Stayers Hurdle (3:20 PM) fight it out for race of the day. You choose. I'll let you know which, dependent on if I catch the winner of either of course.

The Ryanair tests the middle distance chasers, while the Stayers is run over 3 mile, which rewards endurance and a turn of foot at the end up the hill, if you have one. Teahupoo is the Stayers even money fav atm.

The Guinness will be flowing on Paddy's Day for sure. I prefer a Tennents Strong Lager myself. London Council estate stuff 🙃.⯇

Day 4: Gold Cup Day - Friday, March 14▼

◢ The festival climaxes with Gold Cup Day, where the centanarial edition of the Cheltenham Gold Cup (3:20 PM) takes center stage.

The 3m2f big race winner is crowned jump racings ultimate champion. The 1/2 fav Galopin Des Champs, the reigning hero, faces contenders like Banbridge (4/1), with legends like Henrietta Knight calling Galopin a certainty.

Jumps racing at its finest.⯇

Newcastle Bets - Fri Mar 7 2025 (evening meeting)

5:15 Grand Scheme (28/1) is marked up at 2st under his best, so obviously he's not running especially well. He clearly needed the run 7 days ago also.

The quick reappearance turnaround in comparison to the last 2 years+, gives me the inkling he might just be over whatever his problems were.

If that is the actually even nearly the case, he'll sluice up on old form.

Exeter Over The Jumps On Thursday

Venue: Exeter | Going: Π Good (G2S in places)

3:10 Exeter

Cornish Storm 25/1

Done little wrong since going hurdling for the Stuart Kittow Yard. Could have got in lightly for his 1st handicap outing.

Result (3rd 22/1) raced keenly, held up in rear-division, headway chasing leaders after 4 out, 3rd and one pace before next, no chance with leading duo, 3rd.

4:20 Exeter

Imperial Storm 25/1

Had 5 nothing hurdle races in quick succession, but wasn't knocked about at all, since joining Sue Gardner. Clearly needed those races to get race fit after a break since leaving the Fergal O'Brien yard, where he had some decent enough form. Fell on his 1st Chase last time when going ok. Stables are 20 minutes from Exeter Racetrack. I think he'll go well.

Result (Unp 33/1) chasing leaders when backed off and jumped very slowly 1st, soon recovered, outpaced 12th, rallied chasing leaders 5 out, weakened home turn, no chance when mistake 3 out, pulled up before next, PU.

Newcastle Bets - Thurs Mar 6 2025 (evening meeting)

7:00 Orbaan (22/1) has a decent chance on the book of landing this 1m AW hcp from a mark of 75

Claimer Cian Horgan takes off a handy 5lb. On the Newc straight AW mile that could prove decisive.

  • Low Mark: Effectively carrying 72 which may prove crucial.
  • Crucial? You get no time to rest around a bend here.
  • Errors: OK yeah but claimers often make mistakes that rule out the allowance.
  • Positive: Less chance of a rookie mistake on a straight track burnout.

The 32 currently avail on the exchanges is a decent bet the outright win imo. Win lose or draw.

7:30 Ex Irish filly Posh Maisie (66/1) clearly needed the run out a week ago. She broke slowly, jinked right, showed pace, dropped away when push came to shove, beaten 9 lengths.

She needs to get out quick, get balanced quick, get into the race and hopefully be a bit fitter for the run. These fast twitch sprinters improve bundles in a short space of time sometimes.

She has a squeak at a crazy price, because there's not much in the race to beat if she can get it together in a hurry.

The 170 currently avail on the exchanges is a speculative punt worth a small stake.

8:30 Cuan (25/1) is another outsider who has 5lb claimer Cian Horgan up top, this time in a straight course 6f AW sprint hcp.

Cuan is also a filly who clearly needed the run last time. She ran at Wolver, she was up there early, but got caught out later. You'll get fit there quick btw. Newcastle is much easier.

I expect after the 3 week break they've got her ready to get herself in the race early again and from there, we'll see if the 7lb she has less on her back tonight, squeezes up the 7l somewhat, that she got beat by last time out at the tricky Wolver.

The 34 currently avail on the exchanges looks reasonable to me, so I took that.

Thursday Jumps Big Price Bets (Mar 6 2025)

Fontwell & Winc Over The Jumps On Thursday

Venue: Fontwell | Going: Π Soft (Good to Soft in places)

2:40 Fontwell

Next Left 18/1

Bare form suggests he doesn't like the Soft going, hence the price. I am not convinced for various reasons, neither is the Dan Skelton I presume, otherwise why bring him? It's a 300+ mile round journey. So I'll take my chances at the odds on offer.

Result (Unplaced 16/1) chased leaders on outside, lost some ground after 3rd, not fluent 9th, outpaced next, well beaten before 3 out, 6th.

3:10 Fontwell

Ramalamadingdong 20/1

Done very little, therefore on his first go in a handicap hurdle he carries 93. His 2nd run 3 months back there was a glimmer.. He might just have got in lightly for the Bandey yard.

Result (Unplaced 22/1) led until 3rd, lost place 6th, tailed off 3 out, soon pulled up, PU.

Venue: Wincanton | Going: Π Good to Soft (Good in places)

4:50 Wincanton

Whydah Gally 16/1

Last time Joe Tizzard sent this one back hurdling he sluiced home on this going. He's a bit of a handful I read. That said, the 16/1 on offer the repeat is still too big.

Result (Unplaced 16/1) jumped slowly 1st, soon led, headed after 7th, chased leader until pushed along before next, chased leaders, ridden and weakened 4 out, tailed off and pulled up before 2 out, PU.

5:20 Wincanton

Bigz Belief 28/1

Can't say I understand why Bigz is such a big price. Maybe he's just shy of a recent run? (64 days). With Tom Broughton aboard claiming 5lb, I'll take the price. I make him an 8/1 shot.

Result (3rd 9/1 from 18's | 28's early) chased leaders, pushed along after 3 out, ridden between last two, went remote 3rd close home, no chance with leading duo, 3rd.

Potentially Overpriced Uber Price Horse Watch

Caricature of a punter studying the odds

◢ Uber large price horses I am keeping an eye on regarding the betting market. For various reasons, I think they are potentially overpriced odds runners.

It will be interesting to me at least, to keep an eye on how these big-priced runners do, re the market and how they run.

I won't bore anyone with how spotting the potential overpriced horse sausage is made. Just let's keep an eye on them.⯇

Catterick Over The Jumps On Wednesday

Venue: Catterick | Going: Π Good (Good to Firm in places)

3:25 Catterick

McGrath From Clune 28/1

Ex Irish on a reasonable mark who clearly needed the run last time. Pulled like mad for a mile, travelled ok for 4f more, exhausted when asked to actually run, but finished the race. Jumped well throughout.

Today's 28/1 in a 4 horse chase on good to firm, which none of them have seen often before, is 20points too big. Should probably be 8/1 outsider of 4 at most. I'll take a chance at the price.

Result (3rd 28/1) in rear, left chasing front duo at 3rd, slow jump 6th, reminders and rallied after 7th, pushed along 3 out, well held 2 out, 3rd of 3.

Southwell Bets - Tues Mar 4 2025 (evening meeting)

6:00 Alreet Cha (20/1) is plenty capable enough of winning this 7f AW hcp from a mark of 67. She's done so before from 66.

She's fit and running reasonably well. Nothing special. Otherwise she'd be shorter.

William Pyle claims 3lb, which won't hurt. She could well surprise them all from the inside draw she has today.

8:00 Super Superjack (80/1) isn't easy to back on current form, that's why he's up there at 80/1. I don't think he ran badly last time out over this much shorter distance than his usual. He's won over shorter before earlier in his career mind you.

His mark is a winnable one at 70 and I'm expecting them to put him a bit closer to the pace this evening, that's why they've come back here. He travelled well for a long way last time, but was obviously outpaced by quicker horses late on.

I'll take a chance at the crazy price that they'll make more use of his 2mile+ stamina and make it a tougher test for the rest this time out.

Tuesday Jumps Big Price Bets (Feb 4 2025)

M Rasen Over The Jumps On Tuesday

Venue: Market Rasen | Going: Π Good to Soft

3:35 Market Rasen

Autumn Return 33/1

Ran no race the last twice for some unknown reason. If nothing's amiss, the 33/1 on offer about her beating these after a slight drop in grade, is about 4 or 5 times too big. If she were in better form, I'd probably just about make her the favourite.

Result WON 16/1 held up in rear, headway before 8th, not fluent next, closed from 3 out, led before last, clear flat, stayed on, 1st.

4:05 Market Rasen

Topofthecotswolds 50/1

Picked up from the Twiston yard by the shrewd flat & jumps trainer Ollie Pears at 11 yrs old, given a break and sent back out hurdling from a mark of 107, 2.5 stone below his best (142)? Brought down while prominent and going well enough on stable debut. I am of the opinion the 50/1 (66 in a place), is worth a speculative long range curling shot from the left field.

Result (Unplaced 100/1) towards rear, not fluent 3rd, struggling from 8th, 8th.

Uber Bet Series - 2 Uber Bets Landed For Punters This Weekend

betting shop counter cashier caricature

2 Huge Horse Racing Bets Come Up Trumps For A Couple Of Multibet Players

It's been an interesting weekend for a couple of punters out there. I have noticed 2 reports that have popped up in the papers regarding a couple of lucky winners, both William Hill players apparently. 1 multibet returned £35k for a £31.50 layout. Another gambler collected a nice 47k give or take, on a 25p EW lucky 63, plus a £1.93 EW acca on the same horses (£3.86).

Uber Winning Bet One◢ Beating The Odds Ain't Easy ~ But Someone's Gotta Do It

Alright, so here it is: Some bloke out there made a smallish bet with William Hill. End Result? A 25p each~way bet turned into a jaw breaking £35,000 payout. £35k from just 25p. Now, that'll do, yes?

Leg 1: Party Started with Bold Light▼

First up, the 1st leg of the bet, Bold Light. The horse strutted its stuff like John Travolta and won the 2.20pm at Kelso by the skin of its teeth, just a neck ahead. The odds? A handy 17-2. Cheers to Bold Light, because that was the first leg in, of this massive winning bet.

Leg 2: Reality Check ~ No Oscar For Tommy▼

Next, we had Tommy's Oscar. Sigh. Couldn’t make it to the finish line in front. 4th place in the 2.40 at Doncaster. There goes the hope of a totally life changing payout. But wait, there's still 2 or 3 quid riding.

Leg 3: Jet to Vegas▼

Here’s where things got interesting: Jet To Vegas, with a spectacular 22-1 win at Doncaster. Interesting now. 70 pounds riding now, player one.

Leg 4: Moroder Wins At 33's▼

To keep the momentum rolling, Moroder (at an equally impressive 33-1) clinched a victory in the Grimthorpe Chase. Whoa. Shit's hit the fan at Billhill race room. That's what - 2500 just on the 4fold running @ 14's next..

Leg 5: Cracking Rhapsody ~ More Drama, More Winning▼

The miracle came courtesy of Cracking Rhapsody. The horse finished well up the run in, to grab victory in the Morebattle Hurdle (race replay vid) at his beloved Kelso, at 14's. Billhill were definitely paying attention by now, they could see a possibility of the payout reaching about £400,000.

Leg 6: The Grand Finale ~ Kandoo Kid Takes the Stage▼

The final horse in this bet? Kandoo Kid. The Grand National hopeful was lined up for the Greatwood Gold Cup (race replay vid) at Newbury at 9-1. Sadly, Kandoo Kid was miles off 3 out. Booster Bob came from a "pull him up" position and sluiced past Vincenzo up the run in to win going away.

Sure, the punter didn’t get the fairy tale ending with Kandoo Kid, but at the end of the day? He still walking away with a handy £35,000. A decent draw, right?

William Hill's Reaction▼

Spokesperson Lee Phelps from William Hill had this to say about the whole affair:

"There’s no better time to land a big odds acca than with just over a week to go until the Cheltenham Festival. With selections at 14-1, 22-1, and 33-1, it was certainly an outside bet, but that’s led to a monster payout of over £35,000 from just a £31.50 outlay. The run of 22-1, 33-1, and 14-1 winners between 2.55 and 3.30 must have been some thrill!"

Moral of the Story▼

Betting your dough is risky, yes, but sometimes, just sometimes, the stars align for the player, not hte bookie. You might find yourself $35,000 richer thanks to some fancy priced horses and a 25p multibet. Next time, maybe you’ll be the one shocking the bookies.

Punter's Winning Selections▼

  • 2.20pm Kelso – Bold Light (Won 17/2)
  • 2:40 Doncaster – Tommy’s Oscar (4th 11/1)
  • 2:55 Kelso – Jet To Vegas (Won 16/1)
  • 3:15 Doncaster – Moroder (Won 33/1)
  • 3:30 Kelso – Cracking Rhapsody (Won 12/1)

Uber Winning Bet Two◢ William Hill Left Scratching Their Heads After One Lucky Punter Draws £47,000

Looks like William Hill had a rough day at the office when one anonymous punter decided to go full on “legend mode” and walked away with a full wallet and £47,876. And how did they do it? Not one, but 2 bets that hit the jackpot in style.

The unknown Londoner made history by landing both an EW six horse acca and an each-way Lucky 63 with the same horses running across three different racecourses the card: at Clonmel, Ludlow and Chelmsford.

Maciver and Moudan Win▼

The Dream Team: Maciver and Moudan Kick It Off. First up, Maciver (7/2) and Moudan (13/2) stormed home in the races at Clonmel. Right out of the gate, this punter was starting to get interested. Whenever you get the first one in, you start to look. 2 in and it's calculator time.

Charming Getaway and Greatness Awaits▼

Charming Getaway and Greatness Awaits ~ Nicely Named.. Next, the good luck continued as Charming Getaway (7/2) and Greatness Awaits (15/2) took the money at Ludlow. If the punter was nervous before, I bet they were bricking it now.

Kitaro Kich and Jesse Luc ~ The 47 Grand Finale▼

And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better ~ The Only Way Is Essex pair were next up. Kitaro Kich (5/2) and Jesse Luc (11/4) rounded out the night with wins at Chelmsford. That’s how you do it, six winners, one incredible evening's racing and the whole thing wrapped up in a nice £47,876.81 payout.

Punter's Winning Selections▼

  • 2.15pm Clonmel – Maciver (Won 7/2)
  • 4.35pm Clonmel – Moudan (Won 13/2)
  • 4.53pm Ludlow – Charming Getaway (Won 7/2)
  • 5.23pm Ludlow – Greatness Awaits (Won 15/2)
  • 6.00pm Chelmsford – Kitaro Kich (Won 5/2)
  • 6.30pm Chelmsford – Jesse Luc (Won 11/4)

2 Bets Placed▼

  • Each~way Six-fold Acca £1.93 per bet (stake: £3.86) – Returned: £32,771.77
  • Each~way Lucky 63 £0.23 per bet (stake: £28.98) – Returned: £15,105.04
