The all weather racing haters will be laughing into thier beers this evening, after Southwell's AW meeting was called off due to snow. Twitter is full of them. "So the All Weather isn't the all weather then." "Just a little bit of snow." "A little bit of snow and an all weather course cancels it's meeting. Make it make sense." You know the drill..
Clerk Of The Course John Holliday
Southwell Clerk of the course John Holliday said: "The team did their bit to get it on and we'd got most of the snow off the track, but the temperatures did not rise enough to get all of the snow and ice out of the surface.
"There was still little pockets of ice when we were working it and we couldn't get rid of it all, or guarantee that it could be out of the surface in time."
Of course, just calling it "all weather racing" doesn't actually mean they'll be able to race horses regardless of the weather conditions in all instances. Many flat courses undulate yes? Not actually flat at all no?
It does mean however, that far fewer races get called off during the winter months due to rain and frost, than on the turf. Many winters we'd have had no racing at all for days on end, if it weren't for the AW racing stepping in to fill the void. Anyway, the all weather boo boys can make hay for one day while the sun shines (Nov 19, 2024) - you crack on, stick it in your diary.
