After my blog musings, to ensure I don’t completely abandon the “value methodology” I will adopt an approach that I used to apply during my early handicapping days.

Once I have my shortlist I will then assign fair odds to each contender equal to the number of contenders in the race. If it was a two-horse race, they’d both get 2-to-1 fair odds. Three contenders get 3-to-1 fair odds; four contenders, 4-to-1 fair odds, five contenders, 5-to-1 fair odds, six contenders, 6-to-1 fair odds, etc.

Its quick, dirty method but simple method of assigning odds and allows me to focus on what I consider to be my strength which is contender selection until I gain a lot more experience in odds compilation.

If the race is wide open (as indicated by more than 2 overlays) win bets are not applicable as there is more value in the exacta pool (et Barry Meadows – Money Secrets at the Racetrack). The approach for this bet will be based on perms that are overlays based on my minimum acceptable odds assessment.

Qualifiers: Toms Laughter, Figaro Flyer, Reigning Monarch, Linda Green, Arfinnit

Min acceptable odds: 5/1

Depending on how the market assesses the chances of Reigning Monarch, Linda Green and Arfinnitt I quite fancy Figaro Flyer for this one.

Qualifiers: Super Frank, Bomber Command, Mcnairobi, Kyle, Resplendent Nova

Min acceptable odds 5/1

Put a gun to my head and I would say that it’s a race between Bomber Command, Mcnairobi with Kyle being a likely outsider. An exacta bet looks the percentage call this side of the race.

As I have mentioned before Slipper..

Pricing up is not something I have ever felt comfortable with regarding horses.

I know "how" to do it, because I do it with football easy enough.

Horseraces now, well that's a whole new ball game.
